In January, the city of Tarakan experienced a year-on-year (y-on-y) deflation of 0.08 percent, with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 103.38.

The y-on-y deflation occurred due to a decline in prices, as indicated by the decrease in the expenditure group index, particularly in the housing, water, electricity, and household fuel group, which fell by 11.25 percent. Meanwhile, several expenditure groups recorded an increase in their indices, including:

• Food, beverages, and tobacco by 3.42 percent
• Clothing and footwear by 0.17 percent
• Household equipment, appliances, and routine maintenance by 1.11 percent
• Health by 2.54 percent
• Transportation by 0.1 percent
• Information, communication, and financial services by 0.15 percent
• Recreation, sports, and culture by 0.39 percent
• Education by 0.48 percent
• Food and beverage service/restaurants by 0.45 percent
• Personal care and other services by 7.33 percent

The month-to-month (m-to-m) and year-to-date (y-to-d) deflation rates for Tarakan in January 2025 were both recorded at 1.52 percent.
